About Prop. 47

On November 4, 2014, California voters passed Proposition 47, a law that changed certain low-level crimes from potential felonies to misdemeanors. The savings from reduced incarceration costs will be invested into drug and mental health treatment, programs for at-risk students in K-12 schools, and victim services.

"What the voters did is really a blessing—not just for me, but for a lot of people. It gives people a second chance at life."
– Donyell

Hear from everyday Californians on how Prop. 47 is changing lives.

The following offenses are now misdemeanors under Prop. 47.

  • Simple drug possession
  • Petty theft under $950
  • Shoplifting under $950
  • Forgery under $950
  • Writing a bad check under $950
  • Receipt of stolen property under $950

If you also have a previous conviction for some serious crimes in addition to the above crimes, you will not be eligible for a record change under Prop. 47.  Click here for a full list of crimes that will exclude you from getting your record changed.
